New Medicare Supplement Policies Increase 5.9 Percent

The number of newer Medicare Supplement policies (those issued over the last three years) continues to grow, showing an increase of 5.9 percent over 2009, according to the most recent Medicare supplement membership figures.

By the end of last year, a total of 9.453 million seniors were covered by one of these plans, the NAIC's annual financial statements revealed. Although attributed primarily to older policy erosion, these 2010 totals show a decrease over the year-prior's total of 9.508 million individuals covered. Specifically by plan, 2010 totals showed that 44 percent of individuals with Medigap coverage purchased the most popular plan, Plan F. Plan N, a newer plan introduced in June 2010, increased its membership by 147,912 people.
